The name
Ask why the name, and the answer is a reminder. Give more than you take. It was said in the house I grew up in. It is the rule this house runs on.
Every karigar is given his name, his place, and the days the cloth took. His share is held above 45 percent of what a piece costs to make.
Chanderi
A town in Madhya Pradesh. Weavers there have worked this textile for centuries, on handlooms in family rooms. It is light. It lets light through.
A weaver once undid a morning's work over a slipped thread nobody would have seen. Asked why, he said they would know.
How a piece is made
Nothing is cut until it is yours.
The cloth leads. Vertical panels, a contrast seam, a hem that opens.
Lining washed before it meets the cloth. No raw edge shows.
